About
Editor first.
That’s the short and sweet version. Everything else is where it went from there.
I started in publishing and technical editing, then moved toward content operations. Along the way, I’ve worked on novels, reports, training materials, product copy, and retailer-facing web content. The editor part has followed me through all of it.
What I pay attention to
With books, I’m reading for character, pacing, continuity, and the author’s voice. Technical material carries a different risk: one clean-sounding edit can change what the expert meant. Web content has to agree with whatever the reader sees next.
I ask questions instead of guessing. Sometimes that means a query for an author. Sometimes it means tracking down a subject-matter expert or program manager. I want the meaning settled before I polish the sentence.
A brief is usually where I start. I check what already exists, figure out what the reader needs, and flag whatever the source material leaves unclear. If there are a lot of moving parts, I outline first. For a simpler explainer, I usually draft straight through and revise hard afterward.
